TEXT TEXT TEXT! – nothing to do with SMS….

Been thinking over the great content from the ANATS conference last weekend. One of the major issues that seemed to come up again and again during the conference was the importance of the lyric. Understanding what you are singing about, what the words mean, and the subtext of the lyric is of great importance – are you a person singing a nice melodic line or a singer communicating the emotional heart of the song?
If you don’t understand what you are singing, the audience won’t connect with you. When YOU understand what you are singing about, so will your audience. That is when you grab their hearts – singing spirit to spirit and impacting on their emotions. Sometimes we get so focused on making this note sound a certain way, and all the technical work we are doing, we forget we are singing a word which has something important to communicate.
So next time you sing your favourite song, ask yourself, do you KNOW what you are singing about? If not, sit down and write out the words and do a study on the song. What does this mean? Who is the speaker of the song? Where are they coing from? What is their life like? Sing that!

Great words of advice! Brings clarity to the difference between watching “an act” and someone who can truly entertain people.
