Open up your vowels

Hmm, how open are your vowels when you sing? Do you find the most open vowel for that tricky note, or are you trying to keep the vowel pure? Vowel modification is not just for classical singers! Sometimes changing the vowel shape will give a freer, stronger, more powerful sound and our ears will adjust the sound and interpret it as the vowel intended by the lyric. Singing teachers’ ears are trained to pick this up and work with you to discover the best sound. ANATS (www.anats.org.au) can help you find a great teacher. If your voice is small, working with a teacher on breath management and vowel shaping can make an enormous difference to the quality of your singing. Check out my availability page if you are ready to take the plunge!
